Presentazione

Nata a Los Angeles come Jamesetta Hawkins, Etta fu una bambina prodigio e iniziò a cantare musica gospel nel coro della chiesa all'età di soli 5 anni. Nel 1950 si spostò con la madre a San Francisco e passò alla musica secolare, formando un gruppo con altre due ragazze poco più che decenne. Etta James ha continuato a cantare a squarciagola, con il suo tipico stile, ballate blues, R&B e jazz per più di 40 anni e non mostra ancora segni di declinio. La sua vocalità profonda è in grado di provocare in un attimo gli stati d'animo più appassionati e l'attimo successivo quelli più dolorosi e malinconici. "Miss Peaches", il suo originale soprannome, è cresciuta con le ballate di Billie Holiday, con l'urlato rock 'n' roll di Little Richard e con tutto ciò che sta in mezzo a questi due estremi. Pochi cantanti sono stati in grado di porre il loro sigillo sulle canzoni come ha saputo fare Etta James: è sicuramente una professionista del canto di primo piano.
